COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M sophomore defender Karlie Mueller was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
The Sioux Falls, South Dakota native was recognized for her efforts in a week in which the Aggies were the only SEC team to record multiple shutouts, with an 8-0 win over Mississippi State and a 3-0 victory over Vanderbilt.
Mueller also provided a spark for the A&M offense with five assists on the weekend, including four on set pieces. All five of her well-placed services found the head of an Aggie.
In Friday night’s drubbing of Mississippi State, Mueller spearheaded a defense that held the Bulldogs without a shot-on-goal for the entire match and held All-SEC forward Elisabeth Sullivan to just one shot. She also served up three assists, including one on a corner kick and two on free kicks.
On Sunday, Mueller offered up two more assists, including her third of the weekend on a free kick. The Aggie defense held Vanderbilt to four shots-on-goal for the match.
For the season, Mueller has started all 11 matches and leads the SEC with nine assists.
This marks Aggies’ second SEC Defensive Player of the Week honor this season as Jordan Day earned the award on September 9. Texas A&M is 7-3-1 overall on the year and 2-1-0 in SEC action. The Aggies are in a six-team tie for second place in the league standings with six points, one point shy of first-place LSU.
