The Brazos County Tax Office is in its last days in downtown Bryan.

Tax Assessor-Collector Kristy Roe says if you still have to do your April vehicle registration, do it before next Monday, May 4. That’s because the office is closed next Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday; May 5-7.

It will take three days to complete the move to a new building off Pendleton Drive between Boonville Road and Copperfield Drive.

The first day of operation from 4151 County Park Court is next Friday, May 8.

Roe says May vehicle registrations can be done online and in person at local Kroger and H-E-B stores.

An open house has been scheduled for June 9, after regular business hours, to allow tours of the entire facility.

The new location boasts two drive-through windows, a large lobby served by all departments, a computer check-in that lets employees know the type of transaction requested by customers, a conference room for training employees as well as holding volunteer voter registrar training sessions, and an office with its own outside entry for attorneys who handle delinquent tax cases.

Roe says the layout also allows staff to be cross-trained.

There is a second story of the building for document storage and locating air conditioning units.

The timing of the move has been planned around the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles’ availability to move the State’s equipment from the motor vehicle section of the Tax Office. The county is coordinating multiple departments to move the Property Tax, Voter Registration and Bookkeeping departments at the same time. Additional staff training will occur on Thursday for the new amenities at the facility.

This is the third home of the tax office, moving from the courthouse across William Joel Bryan to what was the former Western Auto store in 1983.
