Moroney Named SEC Freshman of the Week

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Jonathan Moroney became the first Texas A&M baseball player to ever garner a Southeastern Conference weekly honor as he was named the SEC Freshman of the Week, the league announced on Monday.

The Houston native had an outstanding weekend in his hometown, picking up All-Tournament recognition at the talent-laden Astros Foundation College Classic. He batted .556 (5-for-9) at the tournament with one double, one home run, two runs scored and four RBI on the weekend.

On Friday night, Moroney had a stellar performance at Minute Maid Park, going 3-for-3 with one walk, one double, one home run and three RBI against the Houston Cougars. His home run in the fifth inning was the first of his career and the first one hit by an A&M player in 2013. In Saturday’s 8-3 win over No. 12 Rice, he went 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI.

On the season, Moroney has started 11 games in leftfield, hitting .351 with two doubles, one triple, one home run and eight RBI.

The Aggies return to action on Tuesday when they host the Prairie View A&M Panthers in a 6:35 pm contest on Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
