MEDELLIN, Colombia – Texas A&M’s Jennifer Madu collected a gold medal Sunday as a member of the United States 4×100 relay, which won comfortably by a couple of seconds with a winning time of 43.97 seconds, at the Pan American Junior Championships.
Madu, who earned a silver medal in the 100 meters on Friday, ran the second leg of the sprint relay and helped increase the lead the US established on the rest of the field. Finishing behind the United States winning time were Canada (46.13), Colombia (46.55), Venezuela (46.70) and Jamaica (47.96).
“All of our exchanges, for the most part, were pretty good for the practice time we were able to put into it,” said Madu. “We had a couple of days to work on our baton exchange, but each of us also had individual events to prepare for.”
The United States women’s team totaled 17 medals in the competition, earning seven gold, nine silver and one bronze. Cuba claimed six gold medals and totaled seven medals overall while Canada turned in 12 medal efforts with four gold.
Including the men’s tally of 22 medals (nine gold, seven silver, and six bronze), the United States junior squad led the Pan American Junior Championships with 39 medals, which included a breakdown of 16 gold, 16 silver and seven bronze. Canada was next with 19 total medals (six gold, six silver and seven bronze) while Cuba had the second best number of gold medals with eight and totaled 11 medals overall.
