Hwy_6Two more snags are coming for those driving the Earl Rudder Freeway.

TxDOT’s Bob Colwell says the Rock Prairie exits will be closed in both directions parts of Sunday and Monday as part of the expanding the Rock Prairie bridge.

And beginning Tuesday, the northbound on and off ramps from University will be closed for the summer. Cowell says that’s in order to have new ramps open in time for the first Aggie home football game.

Meantime, construction is wrapping up at the new ramps affecting southbound traffic at William Joel Bryan Parkway and Briarcrest.

Beginning Sunday, April 13, 2014, at 3 p.m., the Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) contractor will close the northbound freeway section of SH 6 south of the Rock Prairie Bridge. All traffic will be diverted to the northbound frontage road via the Rock Prairie exit ramp. Subsequently, the entrance ramp will also be closed due to the freeway closure. This closure is necessary for the contractor to install the concrete beams for the widened section of the Rock Prairie Bridge. The SH 6 freeway will re-open prior to 6 a.m. on Monday morning upon completion of the work.

Beginning on Monday evening, April 14, 2014, at 6:30 p.m., the Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) contractor will close the southbound freeway section of SH 6 north of the Rock Prairie Bridge. All traffic will be diverted to the southbound frontage road via the Rock Prairie exit ramp. Subsequently, the SH 6 entrance ramp near the Texas Avenue/Deacon intersection will also be closed due to the freeway closure. This closure is necessary for the contractor to install the concrete beams for the widened section of the Rock Prairie Bridge. The SH 6 freeway will re-open prior to 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning upon completion of the work. Police officers will be in place for the closure and to control traffic at the frontage road intersections. TxDOT urges motorists who travel this area to watch for workers and construction equipment in the area and to expect some delays. This $4.2 million dollar construction project is contracted to Lone Star Road Construction, LTD and is scheduled to be completed by summer 2015.

On Tuesday, April 15, 2014, beginning at 830 a.m., the Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) contractor will close two SH 6 northbound ramps and a northbound frontage road lane between SH 30 (Harvey Rd.) and FM 60 (University Dr.). The SH 6 northbound exit ramp to FM 60 will be closed and traffic wanting to access FM 60 will be detoured to the SH 30 exit ramp. Additionally, the SH 6 northbound entrance ramp will be closed and traffic wanting to enter SH 6 will have to use the next entrance ramp. These ramp closures allow the contractor to remove the existing ramps and construct new ramps. The left lane of the SH 6 northbound frontage road will also be closed leaving one lane of traffic between SH 30 and FM 60. This closure will allow the contractor to begin roadway widening operations for a future auxiliary lane between the two new ramps. Along with these closures, a construction speed zone will be in place. The speed limit will be reduced to 60 mph within the work area for the SH 6 northbound traffic only. As a reminder to motorists, this speed limit will be enforced. These closures and speed zone are expected to be in place for approximately three months. This work is part of the $9.6 million dollar SH 6 Ramps Project contracted to Big Creek Construction. The project is scheduled to be completed by Spring of 2015.
