Mom Accused in Baby Mutilation Enters Plea

SAN ANTONIO (AP) _ A woman accused of mutilating and killing her newborn son in San Antonio last year has been found not guilty by reason of insanity.

Attorneys for Otty Sanchez had entered the plea Thursday as part of a deal with prosecutors that would allow the mother to be committed to a state mental institution, rather than face trial and possible prison sentence.

The 33-year-old San Antonio woman was charged with capital murder in the death of Scott Wesley Buchholz-Sanchez. The baby was six days old when the mother’s sister called 911. Authorities found the baby’s mutilated body, with Sanchez wailing that the devil had made her do it.

Sanchez was found competent for trial, but examinations by three separate doctors determined she was legally insane when she killed her son.
