CLEVELAND, Texas (AP) _ A Texas fugitive who’d been on the run for more than 10 years has been arrested and identified with the help of his missing toe.
William Greer was on the U.S. Marshal’s 15 Most Wanted list after being accused of killing his girlfriend Tammy Equivel in December 2006. Police say he confessed at the time to the killing but authorities had no evidence.
U.S. Marshals obtained information on Nov. 24 that led them to believe Greer was in Nacajua, a small town in Mexico. Mexican authorities went to the location and spotted a man matching Greer’s description on Tuesday.
Authorities detained him and were able to quickly confirm his identify after seeing that he was missing a toe, a unique physical trait of Greer’s that had been publicized when he disappeared.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Department currently has custody of Greer.
