Milton Mallard named assistant coach with Texas A&M track and field program

COLLEGE STATION – Milton Mallard, a five-time All-American and former professional athlete, has been named an assistant coach with the Texas A&M track and field program, as announced by Aggie head coach Pat Henry.

“It’s exciting to have one of my former athletes as an assistant coach for us again,” noted Henry, who coached Mallard at LSU. “Milton will be an asset, not only as a good coach, but as a good recruiter. Milton brings great enthusiasm to the entire recruiting process.”

Mallard, a native of Garland, Texas, previously served as a volunteer coach in 2012 at Texas A&M. In 2014 he was an assistant coach at Texas Lutheran University, working with the men’s and women’s sprints, hurdles and relays. The men’s team at Texas Lutheran re-started their program that year.

“I’m humbled and honored to work at such a prestigious university,” said Mallard, who will earn a Master’s in Education in December. “I want to thank Coach Henry and his staff for welcoming me with open arms into the Texas A&M family.”

Mallard returned to the Aggie program this past season as a volunteer assistant during the 2017 indoor campaign when Texas A&M hosted the SEC and NCAA Indoor Championships. Mallard then handled assistant coaching duties for the 2017 outdoor season.

Recently, Mallard was an Athletic Coordinator and coach within the Channelview school district. He also serves as co-events director for the Houston site of the American Track League.

As a professional athlete, Mallard competed from 1997 to 2005 and qualified for the 2000 and 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 200 meters. Mallard ranked among the top 20 in the world in the 200m in 1994, 2000 and 2004.

Collegiately, Mallard competed for UTEP and LSU. In addition to five All-America honors, Mallard claimed five Western Athletic Conference titles at UTEP and two SEC titles at LSU. At UTEP, Mallard was the 1994 NCAA runner-up in the 400m. He was also a scoring member of two top-three team finishes at the NCAA Championships.

In 1992, Mallard earned gold and silver medals in the World Junior Championships. As a prep at North Garland High School, Mallard won a pair of State 5A titles in the 200m and 400m in 1992.

Following his retirement as a professional sprinter, Mallard worked with Carl Lewis Athletics, where he was involved with athlete recruitment as well as meet and sponsorship scheduling. Mallard assisted Lewis in developing and overseeing projects with the IAAF, USATF, and several community-based programs throughout the country.

Mallard served as the head jumps coach for Bermuda during the 2008 World Indoor Championships. His coaching experience has included a 2012 Olympic champion and bronze medalist along with a pair of IAAF World champions, a silver medalist and two bronze medalists.

On the collegiate level, Mallard’s coaching experience includes an NCAA champion, 10 All-Americans, and 15 champions in the Big 12. Mallard has coached five USATF national champions along with national champions in Jamaica, Bermuda and the Bahamas.

Mallard is married to LaTarsha Stroman Mallard, a four-time track and field champion for LSU. The Mallards have three daughters – Keondra, Aliyah, and London.
