Men’s Golf Remains in Contention at SEC Championship

SEA ISLAND, Ga.  The No. 22 Texas A&M men’s golf team battled through tough conditions Saturday at Sea Island Golf Club to finish the second round of the SEC Championship in fourth place.

“I’m so proud of the guys for fighting back today,” Texas A&M head coachJ.T. Higgins said. “We got off to an awful start, I think we were eight-over through six holes. We had a really hard time early on handling the conditions. It was raining and really windy but we battled back and didn’t quit one time.”

The Aggies (285-281=566) turned in the day’s third lowest round to improve their position on the leaderboard and remain within striking distance of the top three in the standings – South Carolina (279-276=555), Alabama (283-275=558) and Auburn (275-289=564).

Meanwhile, Georgia, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, Arkansas, Missouri, LSU, Florida, Tennessee, Mississippi and Kentucky round out the team standings through 36 holes.

“Today, we did a terrific job of keeping us in the hunt,” Higgins said. “Tomorrow is going to be another tough day as well; the wind is supposed to be twice as hard as it was today. We just need to go out there and post a good number because you never know what can happen with everybody playing in tough conditions. We’re in the hunt and the guys have done a great job of putting us there.”

Senior Drew Evans (72-67=139) fired a 67 on Saturday to share the honor of the day’s lowest round with five other players. The Dallas native carded five birdies during his round to finish the afternoon in a tie for fifth place at one-under par.

Fellow senior Cameron Peck (72-69=141) shook off a slow start to post birdies on holes No. 7, 8, 9 and 15, finishing with a round of one-under par to leave him in tie for 13th.

Junior Johannes Veerman (71-74=145) and redshirt freshman Andrew Lister (75-71=146), will enter the final round in ties for 25th and 31st, respectively, while sophomore Greg Yates (70-79=149) ended Saturday in a tie for 47th.

“I’m really proud of Drew, he had a terrific round,” Higgins added. “Cameron was three-over at one point but made four birdies coming in to shoot under par. I just can say enough about Andrew Lister about how hard he fought today to put in a decent round.”

Individually, South Carolina’s Caleb Sturgeon (65-67=132) tops the leaderboard with a two-round total of eight-under par.

The third and final round of the SEC Championship will commence Sunday morning with the first golfers hitting the course at 6:30 a.m. (CT). Texas A&M will be paired with Georgia and Mississippi State during the round and will begin teeing off from the No. 1 tee box at 7:20 a.m. (CT).
