Mengden Named Tuesday Starter for USA Collegiate National Team

CARY, North Carolina – Texas A&M standout Daniel Mengden has been named Tuesday night’s starting pitcher for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team as it faces the Wilson Tobs of the Coastal Plains League. Game time is slated for 6:05 pm Central at Fleming Stadium.

The appearance is part of a tryout for this summer’s edition of the Collegiate National Team. Mengden is one of 24 players trying out for 16 remaining slots on the team’s 24-man roster. The tryout runs from June 21 to July 2.

The USA Baseball Collegiate National Team will head to Japan from July 5-11 for a five-game series. The summer will wrap up with five games against Cuba from July 18-23 in various cities throughout the US.

Mengden went 8-4 on the mound with a 2.11 ERA and 94 strikeouts in 110.2 innings this spring. He held opponents to a .201 batting average and logged two complete games. In league play, Mengden posted a 4-2 record with a 1.88 ERA, one complete-game and 56 strikeouts in 10 starts.

The Houston, Texas native earned All-Midwest Region honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association as well as All-SEC Second Team and SEC All-Defensive Team recognition as a sophomore in 2013.

Team USA is 3-0 against the Coastal Plains League in the trial portion of their season. Mengden has appeared in one game off the bench, going 0-for-1 with a walk in two plate appearances in a 10-2 win over the Morehead City Marlins.
