Scotty’s House Volunteer Services Coordinator Melanie Scarpace detailed a full calendar of events for the month of April to recognize Child Abuse Prevention month.
Motorists may have noticed a sea of pinwheels on the Prosperity Bank lawn north of Villa Maria on Texas. The 800 wind-spun toys represent child victims of abuse and neglect in the Brazos Valley last year. Scarpace said many of those cases start with frightened children, but the process can be rewarding.
“Those same kids, three, four months later, I see them on the counseling side of our agency,” Scarpace said. “They’re happy and they’re laughing and they’re skipping down the hallway. There really is an amazingly positive side to this. We get to see that transformation in them.”
See a list of events on their website, ScottysHouse.org. Events include a five-K run, hot dog eating contest and library book displays.
