A Brazos County grand jury has indicted a Bryan woman on charges of Medicaid fraud and making a false statement. 45 year old Aneli Ramos is out on bond following her arrest last month, which came after the indictment that was issued in July of last year. According to the indictment, Ramos collected between $2,500 and $30,000 dollars in Medicaid and SNAP benefits. The benefits from the Texas Health and Human Services Commission were allegedly received when an employed man was residing in the household.
A Bryan man has admitted to drunk driving in a crash a year and a half ago that took the life of a local woman. According to the Brazos County district attorney’s office, 47 year old Robert Spurger was sentenced to 12 years for intoxication manslaughter with a deadly weapon. 53 year old Maria Canelaria Ramirez of Bryan was killed when her SUV was struck by a pickup driven by Spurger. The truck was going the wrong way on an exit ramp along the freeway in Bryan. Prosecutors say Spurger’s blood alcohol level was .175, which is more than two times the legal limit.
Another Bryan man has admitted to assaulting his wife at least twice during a 12 month period. The DA’s office reports 42 year old Pedro Avendano was sentenced to six years for the attacks that took place on consecutive days in January of last year. Prosecutors say the victim’s co-workers contacted her brother, who convinced his sister to tell police. A medical examination indicated numerous injuries from those and prior assaults. Avendano, who has been in jail since his arrest, will have to serve two more years before he becomes eligible for parole.
