McLeroy on TX Social Studies Standards

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ Republican Don McLeroy helped ignite a national firestorm this year with his ideological approach to rewriting Texas school social studies standards.

But even after losing his seat in the March GOP primary, McLeroy isn’t leaving the State Board of Education without fighting to leave his mark.

He believes the Texas history curriculum has been unfairly skewed to the left and sees his mission to shift it to what he considers a middle ground.

So this week, he plans to challenge its portrayals of the separation of church and state, entitlement programs like Social Security and the United Nations General Assembly.

The curriculum approved by the board this week will set guideposts for teaching history and social studies to some 4.8 million K-12 students for 10 years. It’ll shape state tests and influence textbook publishers for whom Texas is among the top markets.
