COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Former Texas A&M standout Kyle Martin made his Major League Baseball debut Thursday afternoon at Fenway Park. The right-handed pitcher worked a scoreless seventh inning for the Boston Red Sox in their 8-6 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.
Martin retired three of Toronto’s four batters in the seventh inning, striking out the first batter he faced in his big league introduction.
Boston’s ninth-round pick in the 2013 MLB Draft became the 56th Aggie to make the Major Leagues. Since being drafted, Martin has made a steady climb in the minors. He spent the entire 2016 campaign with the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox, pitching in 36 games out of the bullpen, going 3-4 with six saves, a 3.37 ERA and 78 strikeouts in 66.2 innings. In 23 games with Pawtucket in 2017, Martin was 0-4 with one save, a 3.79 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 38.0 innings.
The Austin native went 11-12 with eight saves, 141 strikeouts and a 4.28 ERA in 162.0 innings for the Maroon and White from 2010-13. His 98 career appearances ranks fourth in Texas A&M history with 91 of the games coming out of the bullpen. As a junior in 2012, Martin went 6-5 with seven saves and a 3.20 ERA in 38 appearances. The 38 appearances was one shy of the school’s single-season record. As a member of the 2011 College World Series squad, Martin was 2-3 with one save, a 3.67 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 41.2 innings.
Martin is the first Aggie to make their MLB debut this season. He is the eighth Aggie to see Major League action in 2017, joining Daniel Mengden, Tyler Naquin, Cliff Pennington, Justin Ruggiano, Ross Stripling, Michael Wacha and Alex Wilson. Texas A&M had three players make The Show in 2016 with Mengden, Naquin and Stripling all debuting. Martin is the 16th Aggie to make an MLB debut since 2000.
