Man Fatally Shot Trying to Run Down Officer

HOUSTON (AP) _ Harris County authorities say a man has been shot and killed after he tried to run down an off-duty police officer working a security job at a drug store.

Sheriff’s office spokesman Thomas Gilliland says the officer, identified only as an off-duty Prairie View police officer, was forced to shoot the man Saturday night after a Taser failed to stop the man.

Gilliland says the victim, who name was not immediately released, was known to have written bad checks at the store and had struggled with the officer before jumping into his car and trying to run over the officer.

The shooting northwest of Houston remains under investigation.
