Madison County Sheriff Retires

MADISONVILLE, Texas (AP) _ Madison County Sheriff, Dan Douget has cited medical reasons and resigned.

County Judge Art Henson says Douget had been on sick leave for several weeks. His resignation took effect Dec. 31.

Chief Deputy Paul Cannon has been named acting sheriff.

Cannon, who’s 55, told The Associated Press that he grew up in Madisonville and has been with the sheriff’s department for 26 years.

Cannon on Tuesday declined to answer questions about the health of Douget, who was first elected sheriff in 1998.

County commissioners will decide on who will serve the remaining two years of Douget’s term.
