News release from Bryan police:

On May 24, 2016, The Bryan Police Department received a call from a concerned citizen about an individual who was acting suspicious in Downtown Bryan. An officer contacted the individual minutes later and identified him as a juvenile. At time of the investigation it was determined that no crime had been committed and the juvenile was released.

After reviewing the Downtown Bryan cameras, it was determined that the juvenile entered the Downtown area at 12:03 am on May 24th and proceeded to pull door handles on multiple vehicles. All the vehicles had their doors locked and the individual continued to move around downtown trying other vehicle door handles.

If one vehicle would have been unlocked, the owner could have been a victim of a motor vehicle burglary. This video shows the importance of locking your vehicle and removing valuables.

Motor vehicle burglaries are a crime of opportunity; criminals are looking for vehicles that are left unlocked. The Bryan Police Department wants to remind you to remove your valuables from your vehicle and lock your vehicle doors. That is the easiest crime prevention technique you can do. Though this technique is not foolproof, it can reduce the risk of victimization.

This incident was an excellent example of why the Bryan Police Department asks citizens to say something when they see something suspicious. The police department asks that the public be our eyes and ears to help prevent crimes.

Be alert and observant. If you suspect criminal activity, record a vehicle license plate number or information about the vehicle such as make, model, color, damage or stickers. Also look for clothing, scars or tattoos on people. Information about the suspect and suspect vehicle can assist in the apprehension of burglars.

If you see something suspicious, please call the police. Never try to handle it yourself. Call the Bryan Police Department at 979-361-3888 to report anything suspicious.
