Local Property Tax Deadline Extended

Taxpayers are getting an extra day to pay this year’s property taxes.

Tax Assessor-Collector Kristy Roe said the typical deadline of January 31st, which falls on a Sunday, has been extended to Monday, February 1st.

Roe said payments by mail must have a January 31st or earlier postmark, and payments in person can be made throughout the weekend.

“We do have a night deposit box in one of our drive thru lanes, it is exactly that, it is for after hours payments, so if people have their information, they want to drop their payment off in that night deposit box, it goes into a safe. It will be credited as a January 31st payment,” said Roe.

Roe said Fridays and Mondays are the busiest, so if you decide to make a payment in person, allow yourself extra time.

The calendar is being a friend to the taxpayer as the primary deadline for property tax payments arrives. January 31 is the last day for taxpayers to pay their property taxes with no penalty or interest for late payment. However, taxpayers will be given one additional day to get their payments in this year.

The Texas Property Tax Code provides for such an extension if the deadline falls on a holiday or weekend. The last day of January comes on a Sunday, which will extend the date for payment to Monday February 1st. Payments postmarked by the U.S. Postal Service, or delivered to the Brazos County Tax Office on that Monday will be considered as January payments.

Taxpayers are encouraged to find their statements, or check the tax office website for their correct balance and account information. Doing this well before the deadline will insure that your payment is correct and credited to the correct account. Call volume through the last week of January and especially on the last day is expected to be very high, so to avoid late payment charges, please find your information early and plan ahead.

For those who want to drop their payment at the tax office, there are a couple of options. There is a secure night deposit in drive through lane one. Payments dropped after hours this week or throughout the weekend will be credited as January payments. Payments dropped after 5:00 PM on any business day are considered next day payments, so taxpayers are encouraged to drop that payment over the long weekend to avoid the rush and the stress of trying to make that last minute run to the tax office on Monday before 5:00PM.

Payment in person must be before close of business on the deadline. A drop box is also available in the lobby of the tax office and taxpayers are encouraged to drop their payments during the business day there. Once processed, receipts will be mailed for all drop payments.

The Brazos County Tax Office accepts payment online through their website at www.brazostax.org. The best bargain is payment by electronic check. The payment is drafted from the taxpayers’ account and the fee is only $1.00 for the service. Payments made by credit card are assessed a convenience fee of approximately 2.4%.

Taxpayers can also make credit card payment by telephone by calling 844-550-8208. The Property ID number of the account to be paid, the amount to be paid, and a valid telephone number must be provided to use this service. Without this information, the payment cannot be credited to the correct account, or refunded to the payor.
