BCS Be the Bridge is a local non-profit group, which aims to bring community members together and openly discuss racial issues in the area.
The organization was founded by a group of pastors’ wives who wanted more discussion about racial unity. Coordinator Apryl Williams said the group aims to create open dialogue about racial issues and promote greater understanding overall.
“We want people to think critically about things they are hearing and seeing on the news, discussions they’re having with their family members, and we want people to engage with people that don’t necessarily look like them,” said Williams.
Due to recent news events, BCS Be the Bridge is hosting this book event to address racial discrimination and the way the government treats minorities.
The book under discussion is Michelle Alexander’s book, “The New Jim Crow”.
According to a press release from BCS Be the Bridge, the book highlights the racial dimensions of the War on Drugs and argues that federal drug policy unfairly targets communities of color, keeping millions of young, black men in a cycle of poverty and behind bars.
Williams encourages community members to come to the discussion even if they have not read the book.
The event is Wednesday, December 2, 2015 at 7 p.m. at 2005 Langford St. in College Station.
