Local Landfills Closing and Opening Soon

Over a dozen years has gone into the bureauacy and construction of the new landfill serving Bryan and College Station.

The new director of BVSWMA, the Brazos Valley Solid Waste Management Agency, says the Twin Oaks landfill will open next month.

Bryan Griespach adds Twin Oaks is the only municipally owned landfill in the country certified by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Meantime, at Rock Prairie Landfill, technology is helping extend the life of that facility. At one time projected to close this past February, Griespach says Rock Prairie will close in mid to late June; thanks to GPS units.

Rock Prairie and the new Twin Oaks landfill on Highway 30 in Grimes County will be open at the same time for two to four weeks. Griespach says that’s to allow residential trash to go to to Twin Oaks.

Also at Rock Prairie, Griespach says the local electric companies are preparing to tap the landfill for methane gas.
