Texas A&M senior placekicker Josh Lambo (Middleton, Wisc.) was nominated for the 2014 Wuerffel Trophy, which is given annually to the college football player that “best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.”
Lambo, who will graduate this December with a double major in agricultural leadership and development and renewable natural resources, has emerged as one of the nation’s most accurate placekickers. Handling all of the Aggies’ field goal and extra point tries in 2014, Lambo has connected on 47-of-48 placekicks (7-of-8 on field goals and 40-of-40 on extra points) for a 98.0 success rate. Only five teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision have converted at a higher rate (100 percent by Duke (39-39), Florida State (45-45), Iowa State (32-32), Maryland (43-43) and Wake Forest (22-22).
Lambo came to Texas A&M as a non-scholarship student-athlete in 2012 after a professional soccer career. Since winning the starting job early in the 2013 season, Lambo has hit 15-of-18 three-point tries and 90-of-91 extra points. His streak of 90 successful extra points ranks No. 2 in school history behind only 2011 All-American Randy Bullock’s streak of 122.
An excellent student, Lambo carries a 3.8 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and his post-graduate study plans include ecosystem science and management. He was named to the Southeastern Conference Honor Roll in 2013-14 and a member of the Texas A&M Dean’s List in the Spring and Fall of 2013. Additionally, Lambo was named the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Student-Athlete of the Year in 2014.
Active in the community, Lambo has served as a volunteer coach at Iola Middle School, and has been serving as a speaker at church youth groups since 2008. He also volunteers to speak at Boy Scouts troop functions and is a regular visitor to hospitals to interact with young people.
