Lackland AFB Instructor Gets 30 Days in Sex Scandal

SAN ANTONIO (AP) _ A military jury has sentenced a Texas Air Force basic training instructor to 30 days’ confinement and reduction in rank for his part in a sex scandal surrounding instructors at the base.

The seven-member jury sentenced Tech Sgt. Christopher Smith on Thursday after five hours’ deliberation. The sentencing, including a reduction in rank to airman first class, caps a three-day trial at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

He was convicted Wednesday of wooing one female trainee and fraternizing with another at Lackland. He was acquitted of making sexual advances on the female trainee he wooed and of obstructing justice.

Investigators say at least 38 female trainees were victimized and 15 instructors implicated.

Staff Sgt. Luis Walker got a 20-year prison term last month for rape and sexual assault.
