BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Texas A&M’s Christian Kirk and Daeshon Hall garnered Southeastern Conference weekly honors on Monday for their standout performances in the Aggies’ 38-17 season-opening win over No. 15 Arizona State in the Advocare Texas Kickoff in Houston last Saturday.
Kirk, a freshman from Scottsdale, Ariz., earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors, while Hall, a junior from Lancaster, Texas, received SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week kudos. With the win over No. 15 Arizona State, the Aggies logged their second straight season-opening win over an Associated Press Top 25-ranked team for the first time in program history, with both of those victories coming away from Kyle Field (52-28 over No. 9 South Carolina in Columbia, S.C. in 2014 | 38-18 over No. 15 ASU in Houston in 2015).
Kirk was crucial in the win with a pair of touchdowns – a 79-yard punt return for a TD early in the game and a weaving 66-yard catch and run to put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter. Kirk became the first Aggie freshman in program history to hit the 100-yard plateau in receiving yards in his playing debut with 106 yards and a touchdown on six catches. Four of Kirk’s six catches were for first downs. For the game, Kirk accounted for a game-high 224 all-purpose yardage.
Hall was a disruptive force against the Sun Devils with four quarterback sacks, two forced fumbles and seven total tackles. He spearheaded the Aggies’ nine-sack effort against ASU, which was the most by the Texas A&M defense in a game since 1995. Hall’s four QB takedowns tied for the second-most in school history behind only the five-sack performance by Alex Morris against Houston in 1987. Hall matched the four-sack efforts from former A&M All-Americans Jacob Green, Ray Childress and John Roper.
