Judge Strikes Down Farmer’s Branch Ordinance

DALLAS (AP) _ A federal judge has ruled that an ordinance in the Dallas suburb of Farmers Branch banning illegal immigrants from renting apartments is unconstitutional.

U.S. District Judge Jane J. Boyle of Dallas ruled Wednesday that the ordinance was an attempt to enforce U.S. immigration laws, which she said was something only the federal government can do.

The city has for years been trying to enforce a ban on landlords renting to illegal immigrants and this ordinance was the latest effort. Other versions of have also been struck down by federal courts.

Mayor Tim O’Hare, who supports the ordinance, told The Dallas Morning News that he favors appealing the ruling, but said the City Council would have to vote on that.
