Judge Keeps Montgomery County Kids in Foster Care

CONROE, Texas (AP) _ A judge has ruled two Houston-area children found living in an old school bus will remain in foster care.

The decision came at a custody hearing Wednesday in Conroe.

Child Protective Services spokeswoman Gwen Carter says the children’s mother, Sherrie Shorten, recently released from prison, has been cooperative and CPS is working with her.

CPS took the children into custody in March after a postal worker raised concerns about their living conditions. Shorten has since cleaned up the bus in Splendora, located 35 miles northeast of Houston.

At the time they were put into foster care, the children, ages 5 and 12, were being cared for by an aunt. Their parents were in prison for embezzling money from victims of 2008’s Hurricane Ike.

The next custody hearing is Aug. 15.
