SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Texas A&M senior Jalen Jones has been selected as one of 10 finalist for the 2016 Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced Tuesday.
The Dallas native paces the SEC-leading Aggies (18-3; 7-1 SEC) and ranks seventh in the league with a 16.8 point-per-game average that has seen him hit the 20-point mark in eight of 17 games played. For the season, he is shooting 45.0 percent from the field (98-of-218), 34.0 percent from 3-point range (16-of-47) and 76.3 percent from the free throw line (74-of-97). Additionally, Jones leads the team in rebounding at 7.4 boards per game while compiling 11 steals, 13 assists and eight blocked shots.
During SEC play, Jones has been particularly impressive by scoring 20 or more points in five of eight league games while ranking fourth in the league for scoring at 19.3 points per game, sixth in field goal percentage (49.0) and 10th in rebounding (7.6 boards per game).
Jones has recorded three double-double this season and has twice been named SEC Player of the Week as well as being recognized as the Naismith Trophy Player of the Week on Jan. 12. Additionally, on Jan. 25 he was selected to the midseason watch list for the Oscar Robertson Trophy, which is presented annually to men’s college basketball’s National Player of the Year by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association.
Named after Hall of Famer and 1959 NCAA Final Four Most Valuable Player Jerry West, the annual Jerry West Award in its second year recognizes the top shooting guards in Division I men’s college basketball. A national committee comprised of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates in October, which has now been narrowed to just ten.
In March, five finalists will be presented to Mr. West and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee for the 2016 Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award. The winner of the 2016 Jerry West Award will be presented at the ESPN College Basketball Awards Show live from Club Nokia in Los Angeles, CA on Friday, April 8, 2016. Broadcast information will be released at a later date.
Last season, D’Angelo Russell of Ohio State was named the inaugural winner of the 2016 Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award. For more information on the 2016 Jerry West Award, log ontowww.HoophallAwards.com.
