Joint Meeting of College Station City Council and School Board

A joint meeting of College Station’s city council and school board took place Tuesday night.

Following formal presentations by administrators, members of the elected bodies discussed recent actions affecting both governing bodies.

CSISD board members Jeff Harris and Carol Barrett asked city leaders why financial support was either being reduced or withdrawn.

For instance, a city council majority last month supported a recommendation to end a $54,000 dollar contribution to the middle school natatorium. City Manager Kelly Templin told CSISD officials the council gave early notice as options are weighed for operating city pools in the future.

Templin said he hoped a possible hiring of a private operator of city pools will save enough money to continue subsidizing the natatorium.

Templin also said the city is looking at other agreements with other agencies. He cited Texas A&M does not pay for College Station fire protection except for certain events. And there’s no charge for ambulance service south of the city limits.

Both CSISD and the city are working towards possible bond issues this November. A city committee and its three subcommittees held their fourth meeting Tuesday. And CSISD’s “Planning For Growth” bond committee meets for the first time on Thursday. Officials steered away from extensive discussion about bond issues because they didn’t want to influence the committee’s work.

Formal presentations included background information related to the possible bond issues and the results of a CSISD study using Texas A&M graduate marketing students on why new families chose to locate in their district.
