The College Station police department announces a successful hostage rescue. CSPD’s Facebook page says officers responded to a 9-1-1 text Wednesday morning (December 18) before sunrise that a woman was being held at gunpoint by an ex-boyfriend. Two young children were also inside an apartment at the Fox Meadows complex at Welsh and Balcones, which is south of Consolidated High School. The woman escaped but the children remained inside the apartment. Members of CSPD’s SWAT team entered the apartment while the suspect was asleep and rescued the children. The gun that was used was reported stolen to CSPD last week. The ex-boyfriend, 24 year old Dameont Jackson of Bryan, was arrested for burglary of a habitation, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon. Online court records say Jackson is awaiting three trials. One is for felony possession of marijuana in March of 2023, another is for felony evading arrest in July 2021, and another is for misdemeanor marijuana possession in February 2023. Jackson is also accused of violating probation associated with two convictions for misdemeanor possession of marijuana in incidents that took place in February and June 2020.
It will cost $1.6 million dollars to design three more baseball fields and associated additions at College Station’s Veterans Park. These are the fields that were going to be built at Texas Independence Park until it was discovered after construction began that the soil would not support the fields. Capital projects director Jennifer Cain told the city council before awarding the design contract at their December 12th meeting that preliminary soil tests at Veterans Park shows no reason for concern. The $15 million dollar addition will be built on the site of a pit where road materials were stored during the construction of the original Earl Rudder Freeway. One of the three fields, nicknamed the “championship field”, will feature home and visiting team clubhouses with 32 lockers, six showers, a small training area, and other amenities to attract more tournaments. The championship field will also have a batting/pitching building, a second batting/pitching tunnel, a field maintenance facility, a press box, an enclosed area with a small bar and open space for lounge seating, an exterior deck area, a video board, fixed armchair seating for 2,000, a concession stand, and separate restrooms for men and women.
