Incumbent Congressmen Prove Victorious in Primaries

HOUSTON (AP) _ Nearly half of Texas’ 32 congressmen faced primary opposition from within their own party and all of them have secured their nominations.

Republicans hold a 20-12 advantage over Democrats in the Texas delegation. Eleven Republicans and three Democrats had primary challengers and all locked up their nominations with ease Tuesday.

Only two races extended into the evening and incumbents prevailed.

Republican Ralph Hall emerged from a field of six to avoid a runoff and win the GOP nomination for his 4th District seat in far northeast Texas.

Democrat Sheila Jackson Lee turned aside her first challenge since she took her Houston-area seat in 1994.
