Hundreds Arrested in Nationwide Immigrant Sweep

HOUSTON (AP) _ U.S. marshals and police have arrested more than 1,400 fugitives and cleared 1,654 warrants during a month-long cooperative between federal, state, and local law enforcement in South Texas.

U.S, Marshal Elizabeth Saenz said the June operation was part of a nationwide roundup of fugitives with outstanding warrants called Operation FALCON.

In South Texas, 12 homicide suspects were arrested. Two were arrested on kidnapping charges, 93 for sexual offenses and 360 for narcotics-related crimes, officials said. But the majority were for less serious crimes.

Most of those captured were illegal immigrants.
