Houston Mayor to Announce Political Plans

HOUSTON (AP) _ Houston Mayor Bill White plans to disclose if he’s abandoning his campaign for U.S. Senate in favor of a race for Texas governor.

White has an event scheduled for midday Friday in Houston to make the announcement.

Democrat White hinted at the switch two weeks ago when said he would consider the gubernatorial run after the leading Democratic contender, Tom Schieffer, pulled out.

White said he wanted to hear from Texas voters before changing his plans. Since then his campaign says he’s received thousands of messages, e-mails, calls and tweets weighing in “on how he can best serve our state.”

White is term-limited out of the mayor’s job in Texas’ largest city at the end of this month. He’s served three two-year terms.
