HOUSTON (AP) _ A Houston father could learn his fate for the drunken-driving deaths of five children, including three of his own, who drowned after he lost control of his car and veered into a rain-swollen ditch.
A sentencing hearing with witness testimony was scheduled for Thursday in Houston for 34-year-old Chanton Jenkins. He pleaded guilty earlier this year to five counts of intoxication manslaughter.
Prosecutors say state District Judge Mary Lou Keel could issue a sentence on Thursday or hold off until next week. Jenkins could face up to life in prison.
Police say Jenkins was driving drunk and using his cell phone on the afternoon of April 18, 2009, when he lost control of his car, which went off the road and plunged into the ditch.
