Highway 36 Reopens Following Train Derailment

CALDWELL, Texas (AP) _ A Central Texas highway has reopened but a rail line remains closed after a dozen freight cars derailed.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway spokesman Joe Faust says no one was injured during the accident Sunday night in Caldwell, about 70 miles northeast of Austin. Faust says crews worked Monday to reopen the line.

Faust told The Associated Press that company officials are trying to determine what caused the derailment on a bridge above Highway 36, as the train traveled from Temple to Beaumont.

Eight empty cars ended up on their sides. Faust says the other four derailed cars were hauling cargo and remained upright, including a tanker transporting sulfuric acid. Faust says no cargo
leaked.
