Health Department Update

Cooler temperatures mean it’s time again for flu season.

Community Health Services Director Julie Anderson with the Brazos County Health Department  says it might seem a little early for flu shots, but there’s no reason to wait.

Anderson recommends that everyone six months and older get a flu shot, and reminds readers to stay home when feeling ill, wash hands frequently, and cover up when sneezing.

On the positive side, she says there haven’t been any more reported cases of measles or whooping cough after the recent scare.

Also positive, BCHD’s Environmental Health Specialist Mark Johnsen says weather and bird populations were working in our favor this year to prevent West Nile virus.

Johnsen says while the peak season stretches from the last week of July through September, out of 27 thousand collected mosquitoes, they haven’t gotten a positive reading, but it still helps to be cautious.

As for other animal-related illnesses, although there have been reported anthrax infections in an antelope herd in Edwards County, Johnsen says there haven’t been any cases in Brazos County.
