The Brazos County Health Department has received several calls from people who have found dead birds in their yards or parks.
“Most residents are concerned if this is some sort of virus, specifically West Nile,” says Mary Parrish, Health Educator.
Parrish says the only way to contract West Nile from a bird is by direct contact for a long period of time.
“Specifically with a dead bird, you would have to hold one barehanded for a long period of time,” said Parrish.
Parrish says if you do find a dead bird and want to dispose of it, use rubber gloves to pick it up, place it in a plastic bag, and throw it in the trash. After you handle the animal, wash your hands with soap and warm water.
