COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) — Texas A&M guard JC Hamptonscored a season-high 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting as the Aggies defeated Denver 80-58 on Wednesday night.

The Aggies (6-2) led 34-23 at halftime and the Pioneers (3-5) never threatened their larger opponent from the Southeastern Conference in the second half. A&M forced nine turnovers while committing only four of their own in holding a 16-4 advantage in points off turnovers.

Hampton, a senior transfer from Lipscomb, made 5 of 7 3-pointers, while the rest of his teammates made 2 of 19 from the 3-point line. The Aggies dominated inside, holding a 30-12 edge in points in the paint.

Tonny Trocha-Morelos added 15 points in making all six of his field-goal attempts, and he was the only Aggie besides Hampton to score in double figures. Joe Rosga led Denver with a game-high 24 points — no other Pioneer scored in double figures — and A&M’s Tyler Davis snagged a game-high eight rebounds.

TEXAS A&M HEAD COACH BILLY KENNEDY
Opening Statement…
“I was proud of our guys. I thought we got better against a Denver team that played really well the first half. We shared the ball, played really good defense the first fifteen minutes of the first half, and I just thought all the way around we played better on both ends of the floor.”

On JC Hampton
“When he takes shots out of the offense, he is pretty good. I thought he did that. He passed up on a couple of shots that he wasn’t ready for. He is a hard worker and a smart kid. I’m happy to see him have success.”

On rebounding…
“They got some long rebounds in the first half. I think they scored five points at the end of the half on second shot threes, but I thought the second half we were better. That is something defensively that we have to continue to get better at especially in the zone. Our guards have to get better about rebounding.”

On game performance…
“I like where we are at with our team right now. I thought we improved from last game to this game. With this team, that is what we are trying to focus on. With twenty assists and four turnovers, you are going to win a lot of games no matter who you play. When you have eight blocks defensively, guys are looking over their shoulders a little bit. We made our free throws today.”

On Robert Williams and Tonny Trocha-Morelos….
“He covers a lot of ground as long and athletic as he is. He can play better and we have to continue to get him better, but anytime he is on the floor good things happen. We know that he is a weapon for us. He is a good player. Tonny was really good. He was six for six from the field with fifteen points and three assists in nineteen minutes. He continues to play well for us. Tonny is a weapon inside. He likes to be out on the perimeter shooting threes, but he is really skilled around the basket.”

TEXAS A&M JUNIOR TONNY TROCHA-MORELOS
On his shooting…
“They just find me in the open spot. I just try to do my job by moving beyond the ball and making it easy for my teammates to find me. Whenever I get the shot, I have to make it so they can give me the ball again.”

On Monday’s game vs. tonight’s game…
“When you had a week without playing basketball and you come back and play, you get all anxious to play and you want to do good stuff. You don’t want to mess it up and I think the difference was that we played better defense. We went for the offensive rebounds, defensive rebounds and we took good care of the ball.”

TEXAS A&M GRADUATE SENIOR JC HAMPTON
On looking for his shot…
“I wasn’t necessarily looking for it, but I got a good text from Tyler [Davis] after my last night game and he told me to be more aggressive on offense, so the way they played defense on our bigs, I had open shots and my teammates were looking for me.”

On if he was surprised to get the text from Davis…
“No, I had a meeting with Coach Kennedy last week and we talked about me being more effective on offensive. I’ve had plenty of talks with my teammates during practice, but I knew it was coming and that just gave me more confidence.”

DENVER HEAD COACH RODNEY BILLUPS
Opening Statement…
“Coming into the game, it was a great opportunity to see what a really good team looks like. Not just to be able to compete with them and to play with them, but to beat them. We prepared for it. Our assistants did a really good job of prepping our team to play and compete. I’m not sure why our team’s effort was compromised early in the game. Our offense dictated our defense. With a young group, that happens, but we were never able to come back from that.”

On Denver’s Joe Rosga…
“He shot the ball really well. With the exception of him, nobody shot the ball really at all. Joe is always going to be our leading scorer whether he likes it or not. I rely on him a lot to score and his ability to get in the lane and make plays. He is really good offensively, but he’s got work to do defensively.”

On Texas A&M’s Robert Williams
“When I shook hands with their staff I said ‘man, where did you get Williams from?’ He is really talented defensively. He is a special athlete. He is really talented and I think he is going to make a lot of money. [His blocks] are not a shock. It might be a shock to the players, but not to my eyes.”
