Governor Appoints Two Bryan Residents To State Bodies

Two Bryan residents are appointed to state positions by the governor.

The new commanding general of the Texas state guard is retired Marine general Roger Sheridan. Sheridan, who has been with the state guard since 2012, is also deputy director of the Brazos Valley council of governments.

And reappointed to the Humanities Texas board is April Graham, who is a retired high school teacher and minister. Humanities Texas is the state affiliate of the national endowment for the humanities.

News release from the governor’s office about Roger Sheridan’s appointment:

Governor Greg Abbott appointed Major General Roger O. Sheridan as the Commanding General of the Texas State Guard for a term to expire at the pleasure of the Governor.

“Major General Roger O. Sheridan’s decades of selfless sacrifice and service to his country makes him the perfect individual to lead the Texas State Guard,” said Governor Abbott. “Serving in crucial military operations as a Marine, including Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom, Major General Sheridan brings a wealth of exemplary military experience to the Texas State Guard. I am confident that he will professionalize the nation’s premier state defense force and uphold the integrity of the Texas State Guard.”

Major General Roger O. Sheridan of Bryan is deputy director of the Brazos Valley Council of Governments and most recently served as Brigade Commander of the 6th Brigade. He served more than 21 years in the Marine Corps and Marine Corps Reserve before retiring in 2009. During his service, he deployed in support of Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom, and Restore Hope. He joined the Texas State Guard in 2012. General Sheridan received a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from Sam Houston State University.

Governor Greg Abbott has reappointed April Graham to Humanities Texas for terms set to expire on December 31, 2026. As the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, Humanities Texas conducts and supports public programs in history, literature, philosophy, and the other humanities disciplines which strengthen Texas communities by cultivating the knowledge and judgment that representative democracy demands of its citizens. Humanities Texas is one of 56 nonprofit state and jurisdictional humanities councils in the United States.

April Graham of Bryan is a retired high school teacher. She is a lifetime member of the Spring Branch Parent Teacher Association and a former extraordinary minister and continuing Christian education teacher at St. Cecilia Catholic Church. Graham received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Texas Tech University and a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from the University of Houston.
