The days are numbered for full time operation of the coal fired power plant in Grimes County co-owned by the city of Bryan and three other Texas cities.
BTU (Bryan Texas Utilities) general manager Gary Miller tells our sister station Navasota News that the Gibbons Creek plant near Carlos will shut down at the end of September.
That means 71 will lose their jobs. Another 20 will remain to take care of the grounds and keep the plant prepared to generate power next summer.
The Gibbons Creek reservoir will remain open to the public for the foreseeable future.
The partial shutdown follows attempts since last September to sell the plant.

Additional information from the city of Bryan:
One of BTU’s primary goals is to provide power and energy to our customers in the most reliable and economically attainable manner. The Gibbons Creek generating station has provided a reliable, economical source of electricity to BTU customers for over 30 years. However, due to low cost natural gas generation combined with economical wind and solar generation available on the market, coal generated electric energy is not as viable as it has been in years past.
In September 2016, the Texas Municipal Power Agency (TMPA) and BTU announced the possible sale of the Gibbons Creek coal-fired power plant. After months of continued negotiations, it is now clear that the sale of the plant is not going to proceed. TMPA and the member cities of Bryan, Denton, Garland, and Greenville issued an additional Request for Proposals for the purchase of the plant but have not received any acceptable offers. Due to the economics of the electric wholesale market in Texas, the member cities of TMPA have determined that it is no longer economically feasible to continue year-round operation of the facility. As a result, TMPA has submitted to ERCOT a Notification of Suspension of Operations for the Gibbons Creek Generating Station. This notice indicates that going forward, the generating unit will not be operated except during the months of June through September.
