Game One of World Series Went 14 Innings

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) _ It took 5 hours, 9 minutes to decide the longest World
Series opener ever, but the Kansas City Royals outlasted the New York Mets 5-4
in 14 innings. Eric Hosmer (HAHS’-mur) hit a sacrifice fly that scored Alcides
(ahl-SEE’-dihs) Escobar from third base to end it. Much earlier, Escobar had hit
an inside-the-park home run on the first pitch from Mets starter Matt Harvey.

Game 2 of the World Series is tonight followed by a
travel day Thursday before the scene moves to New York. Tonight’s scheduled
starters are the Mets’ Jason deGrom, who is 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA in the
postseason, against Johnny Cueto (KWAY’-toh) of the Royals. The right-hander is
3-4 with a 4.02 ERA in 11 starts lifetime against the Mets.
