Funeral Services Set for Beaumont Police Officer

BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) _ The funeral service has been set for a southeast Texas police officer killed when a suspect fleeing authorities in a sport utility vehicle struck his police car.

The funeral service for Bryan Mitchell Hebert, the 36-year-old Beaumont officer, will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Beaumont Civic Center. Visitation is set for Tuesday evening at Broussard’s Mortuary in Nederland.

John Wesley Nero has been charged with capital murder in Hebert’s death.

Beaumont Police Chief Frank Coffin says that on Friday night, Hebert had stopped his patrol car and was retrieving road spikes from his trunk when the fleeing SUV struck the patrol car head-on, pushing it into the officer.

Police say officers were pursuing Nero because he had been involved in a domestic disturbance.
