PARIS – Texas A&M all-time great Fred Kerley won the second Olympic medal of his career in the men’s 100m, following a third-place result in a photo-finish Sunday at the Stade de France.
With the eyes of the world on the track in Paris, Kerley once again displayed that he is one of the fastest men in history after crossing the line third in a season’s-best time of 9.81 to secure the bronze medal and the second 100m Olympic medal of his career following his silver in Tokyo.
Kerley’s journey in this year’s Games began Saturday, when he advanced to the semifinals tied for the top-qualifying spot with a time of 9.97.
He carried his momentum into the semifinals which were earlier this evening, as he ran in the third and final heat and placed second to automatically qualify to the final, finishing in 9.84.
In the final Kerley got off to a flying start, leading the pack from the blocks. He was neck-and-neck with Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson in the lane next to him, with fellow countryman Noah Lyles catching the pair four lanes over. The trio dipped for the line in the tightest finish at the Olympic Games in 44 years, with Kerley placing third in 9.81, Thompson second in 9.789 and Lyles first in 9.784.
Kerley’s time of 9.81 ranks him as the seventh-fastest man in Olympic 100m finals history, he is also the only athlete in the field to be a two-time medal winner in the event.
