Fourth Resignation at Texas HHS Central Office

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ A top deputy at Texas’ massive state health agency who was granted nearly $100,000 to pay for his graduate school tuition has resigned.

The Austin American-Statesman reports that Texas Health and Human Services Commissioner Kyle Janek’s deputy chief of staff Casey Haney resigned Friday after it was reported the commission had paid his tuition for a master’s degree in business in one lump sum, a violation of state policy.

Haney is the fourth high-profile employee to resign in the past month. The other three _ former Commission chief of staff Erica Stick, former chief counsel Jack Stick and former Inspector General Doug Wilson _ stepped down amid scrutiny over lucrative, no-bid contracts to Austin tech company 21CT.

Executives with 21CT have defended the agreement. Prosecutors are reviewing the deal.
