Former UT Quarterback James Street Has Died

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ Former Texas quarterback James Street, who took over the Longhorns’ wishbone offense and led them to the 1969 national championship, has died. He was 65.

Serena Fitchard of the James Street Group said Street died early Monday but that no other details were immediately available.

Street started the 1968 season as a backup but was made the starter after two games and led Texas to 20 consecutive victories, including the “Game of the Century” with Arkansas in 1969.

The Texas-Arkansas game was attended by President Richard Nixon. After the Longhorns’ victory, Nixon declared Texas the national champions.

Street later went on to a career in finance and structured settlements.
