More information has been obtained by WTAW News into last weekend’s arrests of two Texas A&M basketball players on misdemeanor marijuana charges…one who has since been dismissed from the team and the second who is on indefinite suspension.
According to the arrest report from university police, J.J. Caldwell and Jay Jay Chandler were arrested about two hours after the Kentucky game. They were two of three men inside a vehicle that was parked and with its engine running outside the A&M post office. According to the arrest report, when the unidentified driver rolled down his window, a cloud of smoke exited the vehicle. The officer wrote “I could smell the strong odor of burnt marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.” Another officer saw inside the vehicle, a clear bag containing what UPD believes was less than two ounces of marijuana.
This was Caldwell’s third contact with Texas A&M police in the last 11 months.
Caldwell was also arrested Saturday night for failing to appear before a justice of the peace to resolve a speeding ticket he received in March of last year. On Valentine’s Day, according to online court records, Caldwell pleaded no contest to driving 49 mph on Wellborn Road near Old Main and violating a promise to appear in court. He paid fines and court costs totaling $641.60.
And according to online court records, a DWI charge against Caldwell from May of last year was dismissed by the Brazos County Attorney’s office. The reason, according to the motion to dismiss, was “in the interest of justice”. County attorney Rod Anderson declined further comment to WTAW News about the DWI arrest.
On Monday, after Caldwell was dismissed from the team, he posted a tweet announcing he “wants to take total responsibility for his actions”.
Chandler issued an apology on his Twitter account on Tuesday.
Caldwell, Chandler…who is on indefinite suspension…and the third person in the vehicle who was also arrested for misdemeanor marijuana possession, are all out of jail on bond.
