Former Jailer Sentenced in ‘Animal House’ Case

MONTAGUE, Texas (AP) _ A former jailer indicted with 16 others after a sweeping investigation at the Montague County Jail has been sentenced to five years’ probation for having sex with an inmate.

In the first of the cases to go to court, 39-year-old Shawna Marie Herr, of Saint Jo pleaded guilty to four counts of improper sexual activity with a person in custody. All the charges involve the same male inmate.

Herr also pleaded guilty to one count of providing a prohibited substance in a correctional facility — for giving cigarettes to a female inmate. Herr is also known as Shawna McCrary.

Nine former guards _ seven women and two men _ were charged with various offenses involving sex or drugs and other contraband. An ex-jail administrator, four inmates and two residents also were charged.
