Former Customs Tech Headed to Prison

EL PASO, Texas (AP) _ A former U.S. Customs and Border Protection technician will spend the next 20 years in federal prison after admitting to conspiring to smuggle marijuana and illegal immigrants into the country.

A federal judge in El Paso sentenced Martha Alicia Garnica on Thursday. She pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to import more than 100 kilograms of marijuana into the United States, conspiracy to smuggle undocumented immigrants, three counts of bribery of a public official and one count of importation of a controlled substance.

Several other co-defendants have already been sentenced to various terms in federal prison.
