Former Camp Fire Exec Admits Crimes

MIDLAND, Texas (AP) _ A former executive director of the West Texas Council of Campfire USA has pleaded guilty to bank fraud and identity theft in a scheme to steal nearly $400,000 from the youth development organization.

The U.S. Attorney’s office says 54-year-old Michael Woodson Burney pleaded guilty Thursday in Midland to one count of bank fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft.

Burney faces a mandatory two-year prison sentence and restitution on the identity theft conviction and up to 30 years and a $1 million fine on the bank fraud conviction. No sentencing date has been sent.

Authorities say Burney wrote himself checks from Camp Fire bank accounts and then changed accounting records to make it seem as if those checks were paid to vendors used by Camp Fire USA.
