Former A&M President a Finalist at New Mexico State

Former A&M President Elsa Murano is a finalist to become President at New Mexico State University.

She is currently a professor in A&M’s department of nutrition and food science
conducting research and teaching in food safety.

Murano joins former Texas Tech President Guy Bailey along with former New Mexico Governor Garrey Carruthers and administrators at Nevada-Las Vegas and the University of Colorado at Denver.

The finalists will visit New Mexico State later this month for interviews and their Board of Regents are expected to make a selection by early May.

Murano served as A&M president in 2008 and 2009.

Also in the running are former University of Nevada, Las Vegas President David
Ashley, former Texas Tech President Guy Bailey, University of Colorado Denver
Dean Daniel Howard and Texas A&M President Emeritus Elsa Murano.

Search committee chair Larry Lujan gave the names to regents on Tuesday.

The finalists will visit the university later this month for interviews, and the regents are expected to select the new president by early May.

The NMSU regents removed Barbara Couture as president last fall after fewer than three years at the university’s helm.

Carruthers has been dean of the university’s business college since 2003. He was governor from 1987 to 1990.
