NORMANGEE, Texas (AP) _ Federal authorities say they’ve arrested a Texas police chief for assisting a woman suspected of trafficking in methamphetamine.
Prosecutors announced Wednesday that Normangee police Chief Joseph Ray “Jody” Navarro was arrested on a count of intentionally exceeding authorized access to a protected computer. The 40-year-old is in federal custody and has a detention hearing scheduled for Tuesday.
Authorities say Navarro, who’s a Madisonville resident, ran a background check on a person in May at the request of 45-year-old Brenda Antanette Evans of Normangee. Evans has been charged with possession with intent to distribute meth, and remains at large.
Navarro faces up to five years in prison while the charge against Evans brings up to 20 years.
Normangee is about 35 miles northeast of College Station.
