Fatal Crash Closes US-79 Near Franklin

DPS identified the driver of pickup who died as 48 year old Michael Edward Fletcher of Bryan. The truck driver, who was taken to the hospital, is 53 year old David Wayne Erskine of Groesbeck.

The highway was reopened at 12:10 p.m., nearly six hours after the crash.

DPS reported the head-on crash was on Highway 79 three miles south of Franklin. A 2012 Chevy pickup was headed north, crossed the center line, and struck a southbound 2013 Peterbilt semi pulling an empty grain trailer.

One person is dead and another in serious condition after a head on collision between a pickup and 18-wheeler pulling an empty grain trailer.

The accident happened around 6:15 a.m. Friday, and closed US-79 three miles south of Franklin.

Robertson County Sheriff’s officials said a preliminary investigation showed the pickup crossed over into the southbound lane and caused the accident.

Robertson County EMS transported the driver of the semi to St. Joseph Hospital, last listed in serious condition.

The driver of the pickup was pronounced dead at the scene.

TxDOT officials said they would need to make repairs before the road could reopen.
